BLIS, Inc. is a privately held company based in Portland, Oregon offering financial and insurance products designed to help improve access to surgery.  The principal insurance product developed by BLIS is called BLISCare™, an innovative and proprietary product that insures surgeons for complication related care benefitting the BLIS Surgeon, their patients and the hospital.  By removing the primary barrier to surgery, BLIS is helping clients increase access for their patients.  BLISCare is currently available only for certain bariatric procedures with plans to expand into other surgical specialties in the future.

BLISCare is not a traditional health insurance product, as BLIS insures its network of surgeons, not their patients. Should the patient of a BLIS Surgeon experience a covered complication following surgery, the BLIS Surgeon can authorize additional medical care for the care and treatment of the patient.  When they do, BLIS pays all the medical bills for the care ordered by the surgeon. The patient has no financial responsibility for any authorized care. 

BLISCare enables surgeons to protect their patients from the extra cost of surgical complications, just like a new car warranty protects car owners from the extra cost of covered repairs.  BLISCare helps protect patients indirectly by paying for approved medical care as a result of a covered complication resulting from surgery.  The patient receives the extra care at no additional cost.

 

As of January, 2010, BLIS has protected over 2,100 bariatric (weight loss) surgical procedures on behalf of over 110 BLIS Surgeons in 25 States.  As a result, BLIS has protected patients from over $4,200,000 in complication related extra medical expenses. BLIS reimburses medical providers directly so the patient should have no financial responsibility for the complication related care.
