When it comes to weight loss surgery, study after study confirms that experienced bariatric surgeons and surgical facilities have consistently better surgical outcomes. A July, 2009 study by Healthgrades indicated that bariatric patients undergoing weight loss surgery at “top-rated hospitals had, on average, a 67% lower chance of experiencing serious complications, compared to patients who received treatment at poorly rated hospitals.”
The Internet provides extensive information regarding bariatric surgeons and their practices and there are many sites providing information from other patients regarding their experiences with a surgeon or practice. Additionally, there are certification programs for bariatric practices that review the clinical outcomes for both surgeons and their facility partners.
The American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery sponsors the Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence (ASMBS-BSCOE) program where practices and their hospital partners must undergo an extensive data evaluation as well as an on-site survey. To find an ASBS-BSCOE surgeon in your area, visit www.surgicalreview.org. The American College of Surgeons also has a bariatric certification program and recipients of their certification can be found by visiting www.acsbscn.org/Public/index.aspx.
